Great, great entry! I especially like the sentiment about looking for images to identify with. What's interesting is that I cheer Asian American images in comic books, but, for the most part, they're either Chinese or Japanese (maybe a Korean or Vietnamese person thrown into the mix). And I'm Filipino American. So, really, I don't know if I've ever seen an Asian American image that I actually truly identified with. I mean, you know it's bad when you're watching a remake of Satan's School For Girls and, seeing a Filipina with speaking lines, you burst out, "Oh, my God! It's a Filipino on television!"

I made it through about the third issue before I gave up on Hudlin's series. I really only liked Panther kicking Captain America's ass. It certainly helped setting the tone of just how powerful T'Challa is.

But the whole thing of having characters who were clearly real people, just with single letters changed in their names is one of those unclever things that some writers seem to like to do (look how timely I am!) and it's just annoying. And I just felt like it was lackluster. This was disappointing as one who loved Christopher Priest's run.

Yeah, I just finished reading Black Panther #24 and was tempted to post again saying how much crossovers are distilling my enjoyment of it. Even though it handles Civil War's obvious influences far better than it's parent title, especially the part about using false information to invade a sovereign nation, "Are they really gonna send us in? After what happened last time?". Heh. Ok, hell I still liked this issue.

Ah well, I guess forced involvement in these silly events is the fate of all the 20k books Marvel are publishing. It might boost sales in the short term but it never lasts, and as you yourself prove can hurt sales by annoying long term readers.

... Oh, and I wish I could crush the completist in me as well. I should have made that my new years resolution or something.

Yes, I was delighted to see Boba Fett revealed in the second trilogy, one of the few things I liked about them. His one-shot from Dark Horse last year was the first Star Wars comic I bought since Marvel's original run and it was a fun read.

As for Hudlin's Black Panther, I still support its existence (despite his disagreeable social outlook and inability to take criticism), but the post-wedding Civil War tie-ins were too much for me so I dropped it. The completist in me shudders a bit (I have the complete run of every BP series from Kirby through Hudlin, missing only his Jungle Action run) but I know I'll be able to pick up the skipped issues cheap on eBay or at a convention sometime down the line.

Well at least now you know that Boba Fett was a M?ori (go Temuera Morrison!). Who, if you know your New Zealand history, or have just seen Once Were Warriors(seriously check it out) were(are) just as disenfranchised as African Americans. And apparently despite your willingness to support diversity (for the children) Hudlin's Panther just didn't cut it, at least according to your "on the shelves" this week. Of course I'm enjoying it and I'm as white as you get. My point? Dunno, maybe it's this: Stars Wars sucked. Probably not though.
