Why should we support “independents”? I support GOOD COMICS. Most of the “independents” you list, and ask us to support (for no reason other than they ARE “independents”), are total unreadable crap that no one buys for a REASON! Let’s stop generic calls to support all “independents” regardless of quality, and instead support GOOD COMICS!
You’re right, technically, but the fact of the matter is that a only small percentage of the direct market supports independent comics – including Dark Horse & Image, who get the bulk of that limited support – and the average fan isn’t even aware of the existence of the hundreds of other comics published each month, good or bad.
“Try Something Different” is meant to be taken literally. There’s an equal percentage of “unreadable crap” published by Marvel & DC that is being bought for no other reason than the completist mentality. Some of the best indies I’ve come across have been from randomly sampling comics I’d never heard of, a luxury I have thanks to being in NYC where Midtown stocks a wide range of comics.
PS: You ask: Why should we support “independents”?
Because if we don’t, we end with a Wal-Mart scenario…something we’re pretty close to any way with the glut of SuperBat-SpiderMutant spinoffs flooding the market. Never mind the overhyped corporate crossovers that are dominating the sales charts.
