Rocketo Love from Junot Diaz

Today's N.Y. Daily News, in their monthly Viva New York pullout section, included a feature called "Authors Pick Their Favorite Reads of 2006", wherein Junot Diaz (of the critically acclaimed collection of short stories, Drown), gave Rocketo a shout-out:"A comic book of extraordinary power, with a Cuban hero, written by a Cuban writer. I've read nothing like it before and can't imagine anything like it ever being written again."High praise indeed! And with Diaz being one of three featured authors in the article, his selection, the only comic book picked, really stands out. (Drown was an excellent read, highly recommended,…

Delays Ahead for newuniversal?

Newsarama's interview with newuniversal artist Salvador Larroca suggests it might be yet another high-profile series Marvel is unable to ship on time:NRAMA: Could you tell us what was your first impression when you read newuniversal script?SLR: I loved it. It was water clear that Warren Ellis would write a solid script, but I really got impressed with the visual strength of his writing: I could really see the movie inside the story and drawing it was not only easy but a real pleasure. After more than 14 years in the comic industry, the script got me so impressed that I…

Creator Directory is Up

Instead of writing any reviews today, I decided to finally get one of the "resource" aspects of the site up and running, focusing on the Creator Directory, which is now available. It's a somewhat selective list, a mix of well-known and upcoming creators whose work I've enjoyed in the past and who have a legitimate web presence (where the hell is Frank Miller's web site?). One of the more frustrating things, both as a fan and journalist, is trying to track down solid information on certain creators, or information on their non-Big Two projects, so hopefully the directory will become a…

Happy 2nd Anniversary

Once again I missed the blog's anniversary this year, though this time it's more a result of the long hiatus we've been on since the summer. Still caught the right month, though, so it's all good. Two years of blogging about comics have seen some serious ups and downs here at CBC -- in output, traffic and personal gratification -- but while organizing my collection last night (now up to seven longboxes and three short boxes), I realized a few things:1) Comics are great reading and come in a variety of genres and styles;2) There are way too many covers that…

CBC Quickees: Big Two Roundup

I'm so far behind on reviews these days that in order to jumpstart my critical faculties, I've grabbed a stack of comics from my most-recently read pile and, focusing on some of the floppies I'm still reading from the Big Two, am giving random ones the super-quickee treatment.Criminal #1-2 (Icon/Marvel, $2.99), Captain America #3 (Marvel, $2.99), Daredevil #91 (Marvel, $2.99)Ed Brubaker has officially become one of my favorite comics writers, whether it's working within his own gritty world in Criminal, or making two of Marvel's best-known but least interesting characters immensely readable. The first two issues of Criminal feel like…

Random Top 5: Most Anticipated

The reorganizing of the apartment continues, but the comics bookshelf is complete, with every graphic novel and comic book-related book I own now in one place. Some had been stashed away in longboxes, but now that they're all breathing freely, I've noticed there are several I've yet to get around to reading yet.As soon as I'm finished reading The Prestige, the five I'm most anticipating getting to next are:5) Black Superheroes, Milestone Comics and Their Fans, by Jeffrey A. Brown4) Outlaws, Rebels, Freethinkers & Pirates, by Bob Levin3) Project: Romantic, by Various2) Goodbye, Chunky Rice, by Craig Thompson1) Will Eisner's…

Call me muy lame-o!

So, I'm in Boston with a free night, an expense account and my first appointment tomorrow not until 10am and a mere three blocks away from my hotel and I...1) Walked 5 blocks over to Faneuil Hall and had dinner at a divey Mexican restaurant I could afford on my own;2) Rushed back to my room to catch Grey's Anatomy.I am a disgrace to the sales profession!Earlier in the day, I got lost several times while navigating via Hertz' NeverLost GPS, which tends to not work well when it can't pick up its signal, like when you're underground, or say,…
