1) I'm so over Angelina Jolie. Caught pieces of her interview last week and couldn't help but be irritated. Salomé nailed it: "She's a spoiled, overprivileged brat that craves attention." Or something to that effect. Seriously, though, she's got big boobs and lips (but no hips or ass at all!) and has done a couple of decent movies (Gia and Girl, Interrupted) where she got to act out. Everything else she's done was lame to sucky. I feel sorry for that Cambodian kid she adopted. How the hell do freaks like her get to adopt a kid anyway? 2) The…
Whenever I find a new passion - whether person, place or thing - I tend to throw myself into it 120%. Having cleared my plate of the administrative responsibilities (and psychological baggage) of running a little bit louder, comic books have quickly and completely rushed in to fill the void. I am so hooked! Finished reading Mark Salisbury's fascinating Writers on Comics Scriptwriting, interviews with an assortment of prominent comic book writers discussing inspiration, motivation and process, along with a healthy dose of egomania and outright weirdness. Grant Morrison, anyone? Despite only having a single woman represented and a complete…
Woah! Midtown Comics is scary cool! They sell EVERYTHING. They even had a lot of Moon Knight, though I'm glad I changed my mind about him before I went in there. Spent my whole gift certificate (not as easily as I expected, either) and got a few more of the Loeb/Lee Batmans I wanted, all four of the Baron Karza mini, the latest Micronauts, couple of the new Titans series and the new New Mutants. Also grabbed a Batman graphic novel, The Long Halloween (good looking out, Oscar!) which just happens to pick up from the Batman: Year One storyline!…
ser·en·dip·i·ty the faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for. Omar is a bad man. Bad. Appealing to the geek in me, he dropped the idea of a fan fiction-type project in my head - writing our own versions of comic books online - and it's like the time I was introduced to Pokemon! We hit St. Mark's Comics Friday night to refresh my memory as I haven't actively bought comics since the late 80's and I realized my taste in comics was pretty similar to my taste in other things: the underdogs, the unrespected, the…
This is what happens when you take a notebook with you to lunch... "The View From Airplanes" (1st draft, free write) From the air I remember the city of brotherly love mostly for the fact that I don't remember it at all. Like movies filmed in Vancouver non-descript vague images of buildings not tall enough to be New York I do remember how close they seemed when we hit the air pocket dropped a couple of hundred feet and wondered what the news coverage would be for a commuter plane crash killing six of the United States Army's newest recruits…
Almost forgot about the movies! Rented Drumline and Barbershop this weekend. ... Finished hating? Ok. Drumline was the infectious sugar-coated confection I expected it to be. The marching scenes were amazing and the storyline was solid if predictable. I love these teeny-bopper movies! This one's up there with Varsity Blues. Wasn't sure what to expect from Barbershop, what with all the controversy around it last year. Ended up loving it like Soul Food. Pitch-perfect dramedy with some laugh-out-loud moments that hit all the right buttons. Ice Cube has managed to cross over without the Will Smith taint of sellout and…
Welcome to the next edition of getting to know your friends. What you're supposed to do is copy (not forward) this entire e-mail and paste it nto a new e-mail that you'll send. Change all of the answers so they apply to you. Then, send this to a whole bunch of people you know *INCLUDING* the person who sent it to you. The theory is that you'll learn a lot of little known facts about your friends. And it's just stupid fun. 1. WHAT TIME DO YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING? 5:30am if I'm on time, 6:15am if not.…
