My own Poetry, Fiction, Non-Fiction, and occasional commentary on all of the above.
Somewhat randomly, I've been asked to contribute a script to an anthology comic book by this guy, Erech Overaker, whom I know electronically via CBC and Buzzscope. He's looking for "...strictly slice of life, everyday kinda stuff, humorous dramatic ambient whatever. I want to show the other side of comics, you know?" All things considered, it's a rather flattering request and I'm tempted to take him up on it, though I've never really given any serious thought to writing something for comics. I've joked about it, sure, but it's a tough form that I've come to have a much greater…
With CBC on hiatus for a bit while I come up with a plan for what to do with it, I'll be pimping my Buzzscope writing here for the time being.Weekly ReviewsCombat Zone: True Tales of GI's in Iraq, Vol. 1 TPWhatever side of the ideological fence you may be on, there is some great story-telling potential in the concept, True Tales of GIs in Iraq. Unfortunately, whatever Zinsmeister's talents may be as a journalist, they do not translate into compelling sequential art.Silent Dragon #1 (of 6)Andy Diggle offers up a veritable buffet of a story that demands you return…
Comics Continuum has the Image, Dark Horse and Devil's Due October Solicitations up, and here's what I'm particularly looking forward to reading and/or snarking:SEASON OF THE WITCH #1Written by Jai Nitz, art and cover by Kevin Sharpe."Spring." Jessica Suddreth was a normal high school freshman until she was magically transported to the fairytale world of Asamondo. Once there she trains to be a Spell Sword, a mystical warrior, to lead the peasants against the tyrannical King Elian. The good news is she's the best Spell Sword ever. The bad news is she still has all the emotions and insecurities of…
There's a passage somewhere in the Bible to that effect, the equivalent of the more recent "can't have your cake and eat it, too."The whole poetry & comics thing is one example, where a couple of months back I was inspired to get back into the scene and start performing again, only to be cockblocked by life's twisty little turns. In the meantime, comic books have swallowed the majority of my free time, not to mention storage space, as my writing for Buzzscope has taken on a life of its own. (Check out my latest feature here.) There's just not…
With most of my content going over to Buzzscope these days, Comic Book Commentary is looking like the red-headed stepchild since no one else has stepped up to fill the void. As a result, most of our traffic is now coming from Google searches hitting old content instead of regular readers returning via their bookmarks and RSS feeds. So, I think it's time to freshen things up by issuing an open call to potential contributors and adding some fresh blood into the mix. If you've been randomly writing about comics in your personal blog, or on whatever message boards you might…
Here's what I'm currently buying on a regular basis, and why. What about you?100 GirlsBecause it's a great story, and Adam Gallardo's an interesting guy.15 MinutesBecause it makes C-list superheroes interesting.Action PhilosophersBecause it's smart and funny and takes more than 5 minutes to read each issue.ArañaBecause I really wanted it to be good, and have been hoping it gets there. (Though, honestly, my hope is fading fast.)The AtheistBecause it has an intriguing plot and a brother as a lead character who isn't a stereotype. (Well, not a bad one, at least, because he's definitely a bit of the stereotypical Sam…
