COMMENT: Speakeasy Shuts Its Doors

UPDATED...AGAIN! Let the fallout begin... Elk's Run creator/writer, Joshua Hale Fialkov, confirmed what seemed pretty inevitable earlier this afternoon over on his blog: So, just got off the phone with Adam Fortier, President etc. of Speakeasy Comics. Speakeasy is no more. Due to some payment problems and low sales, it seems, they've had to lock up shop. Perhaps realizing the story was about to break, Speakeasy mouthpiece Vito Delsante emailed Speakeasy cheerleader Chris Butcher, a Toronto retailer and comics blogiverse gadfly, a confirmation, which he posted about half an hour ago: "As unofficial public relations for Speakeasy Comics, I feel…

NY Comic-Con Journal: Day 0

So it all begins tomorrow... :-)Actually, it technically began about 3 hours ago as the ICv2 Graphic Novel Conference for Professionals is today, a series of panels on the past, present and future of graphic novels. Something I would have loved to attend, but alas, taking off tomorrow from work is about as much as I can handle. [EDIT: Tom McLean's coverage at the link.]The next three days promise to be a whirlwind of activity, with tomorrow probably being the most relaxed; once I get there, at least. Over the next 19 hours, I have to print some updated business…

Google Me

A co-worker/friend of mine is tracking himself through googlerankings.com, trying to get his site listed as the number one search on Google, Yahoo! and MSN for his name. Out of curiousity, I manually searched my full name on each of the search engines to see what my years on the internet have reaped.Google Top 5:Comic Book Commentarycomiccommentary.blogspot.com/loudpoet productionswww.loudpoet.com/BUZZSCOPE :: Establishing Shots #4: One Year Laterwww.buzzscope.com/features.php?id=1209Blogger: User Profile: Guy Gonzalezwww.blogger.com/profile/1165003louderARTS Projectwww.louderarts.com/poets/gonzalez/I'm a little surprised by the last three searches as they seem rather specific, especially the Buzzscope column and my louderARTS page. I'd have expected my staff page on Buzzscope to…

LINK: Reality Check + NYCC Update

My latest Establishing Shots just went up, and I go off on a bit of a personal, real world tangent before ripping into idiot trolls:At this point, there's some ill-mannered idiot out there reading along wondering why I'm not writing about Spider-Man's new costume (I give it six months), or offering yet another opinion on Infinite Crisis #4 (Can you say, "plot hammer", boys and girls?). He's probably considering hitting the talkbacks to post some asinine comment like:"Wish there was some menu here where I could filter out all those fine authors who confuse a column with embarassing gender battles…

COMMENT: Comics & "the Mainstream"

The Comics Reporter's Tom Spurgeon, in his first CR Sunday Magazine of the new year, said:"Screw being mainstream anyway. Comics has a lot of its cultural power not just as a secondary art form, but as a semi-disgraced secondary art form. I think because of their personal neuroses, which in many cases expresses itself in a desire to be popular, some comics fans put too much stock in a wide audience. The goofballs who write 'According to Jim' have a bigger audience than the playwright Tony Kushner. But who has the more admirable, effective and ultimately desirable creative platform? I'd…
